- The DR at a glance

The island was discovered by Columbus in 1492 on his first voyage to the New World. He considered it to be "the most beautiful island in the Caribbean".

The DR embraces 48.700 sq.km (18.800 sq.miles), about the size of Switzerland. It is a presendential republic since the early 60ies and a masterpiece of democracy in the Caribbean. The DR is the most mountainous of the West Indies islands and the highest peak in the Caribbean archipelago lies within its territory (Pico Duarte, 3175 m or 10.417 ft).

One of the several pleasant characteristics of the island is the year-round gentle climate with relatively little variation in temperature between summer and winter. There is an amazing variety of exotic flowers, trees and fruits growing on the island.

Spanish is the main language, but English is catching up fast.

The local currency is the Dominican Peso, but most transactions are denominated in US$.
